Aug 31- We arrived in Chiang Mai Wat, Wat, Wat- Wat is the Tai word for temples. We toured 3 temples today. We will never need to see another temple again but of course we are going to see one at Angkor Wat in Camobia later. Chaing Mai was the center of the old Budhist religion in the area. Most of the temples have snake figures on the entry ways. The monks still ring a huge bell at 6am and 6pm so the people will know what time it is. Some of the temples were 100’s of years old. One temple has the shoulder bone of the Buddha buried inside. That is the legend but who really knows what is buried inside when it was built so many years ago. The monks have several schools and colleges in Chiang Mai. Before any male can be married, he has to have spent at least one week living full time with the monks.
