Today we had the morning in Palermo to sleep in and eat a late breakfast because our boat to Lipari did not leave until 2pm. We said good-bye again to the other couples from our tour who were still here (most left early morning to go to the airport). After breakfast we decided we wanted to go to the Capuchin Monastery, so we called a taxi and he took us because it was pretty far away. It only cost euro 1.50 each (not bad). The catacombs were absolutely amazing! There are literally bodies hanging from the walls that have been mummified- unbelievable. They are clothed and some of them look to have been petrified and still have skin and hair! They hang from the walls and in open coffins. Jeanine is sure she has seen this place on TV before. We couldn’t take pictures inside, so we got a guide book and some post cards. We took another taxi back to the hotel and we took our time packing our bags and getting ready to cross the street to the boat dock. We decided we were wimps and didn’t want to cart all of our luggage through traffic across the busy street, so we paid a taxi to take us! We got there around 1pm and we got our tickets. We sat inside and ate really bad sandwiches and had to cart our luggage around a stray dog that was sleeping in the middle of the eating area inside…very sanitary. We then made our way over to the hydrofoil that took us to Lipari (pronounced Lípari). The boat was ok but the a/c didn’t work very well and our side was constantly in the sun. The seats were like airplane seats and it was first come, first serve, so it was a good thing that we were one of the first ones on the boat! Diana, the woman who runs the hotel, met us at the dock on her bike! We had to roll our luggage through town about 10 minutes to get down to her hotel. It’s very nice! We settled in and then talked to her daughter who sets up boat trips (the book had said that her husband took guests out on a boat, but that is definitely a lie). We made a reservation to go to Vulcano and around Lipari tomorrow. We ate out at a restaurant that Elena recommended. We went back and went to bed early.
