Today we were up early to go to the Vatican to be blessed by the Pope! We got to St. Peter’s around 8:15 and stood in a long line with crazy people who kept pushing and shoving to go through the metal detectors. Then we walked all the way up and found great seats in the first section in front of the red canopy where the Pope sat. Around 9, Cindy and Jeanine decided to go to the bathroom and before it started- bad idea. It took 45 minutes! The line was huge and they only had 4 stalls open! Crazy- and people kept going to the front to but in line (not cool). They missed some introductions but nothing important so it was okay. We saw the Pope come out in his Pope-mobile (a big white hummer) and all the Swiss Guards in their orange and blue dress. They then introduced the Pope, and he did a sermon in Latin. After that he explained his sermon, said hello, and gave a blessing in 6 different languages (German, French, English, Spanish, Polish and Italian)! Wow! It took a long time but it was really neat. When it was over we took the train to Termini station where we found a great restaurant (along the side of a skuzzy road across from the station). We walked across the street when we were done to the National Roman Museum, the Octagonal museum (where we could not take pictures but it was really neat), and some churches. We tried to find the baths of Diocletian but could not- we think it’s closed. We came back to the hotel and decided we wanted to order in- unfortunately it took 2 hours for our pizza, chicken, and “mozzarella sticks” to arrive! Kathy asked the driver what had happened and he said that they had called him 3 times, but he was at some people’s house and didn’t leave…very strange…in the US he would be fired! We watched Stealth in bed after dinner and then went to sleep!
