We have docked in Avignon. We took a walking tour of the city in the morning, most of which was spent at the Pope’s Palace. This was the Vatican during the late 1200’s for approximately 100 years while the popes were mostly French. Eventually, Italy demanded an Italian Pope but the French also chose to have a Pope too. They were eventually called Anti-Popes and were never recognized by the Vatican. We also toured the Church of the Virgin Mary next door. We then walked through town to the central market and then back to the ship.
