Our last day in Crete. We spent the morning at the Archeological museum in Herakleion. This museum is second to the museum in Athens for antiquity items. We saw the Snake Goddess found at Knossos, the Bull vessels found there and at Phaistos, many ancient coins. We saw many wall paintings that have been removed from the sites and preserved in the museum. We also saw the ancient ring of Minos. This was originally found when excavating Knossos in the early 1900’s and then vanished until it was donated to the museum in 2004. It is engraved with scenes from the ancient Minoan culture and palace. It is solid gold and not surprising it was stolen. We saw many pots, jugs, ceramic sculptures and everyday bronze cutting tools and weapons. Many of the items displayed are Neolithic time period and forward. We, of course, saw weapons, helmets and metal shields. It seems no one could get along. I guess things haven’t changed that much. The museum was very interesting. After the museum, it was time to fly to Athens for our overnight before going to Berlin. Upon arrival in Athens we were met and taken to a full size bus that ended up being our personal taxi back to the hotel. It was an interesting experience.
Oh, it appears that our Berlin Eastern Europe River cruise tomorrow is just an April Fools joke. At 10:30pm, we got a call that it had been cancelled due to flooding on the Elbe River. We were still talking and trying to figure out our options at 1am. Sleep was troubled tonight.
