Once we reached Elounda which is a small sea side town, it was obvious again that tourist season starts next week. The main attraction is a visit to the island of Spinalonga. This was an ancient Venetian fortress that was converted to a leper colony in 1904 until 1957. The signs all say that boats leave every 30 minutes everyday. Apparently this is not the case until tourist season officially opens. We were told to come back in an hour before we could travel to the island. No other people were waiting to visit at that time. Then the restaurant we had lunch at told us that we could only get a toasted cheese, toasted ham and cheese or toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwich. No other food would be available until next week.
