Off to another hotel to be transferred to the boat. Oh-Oh! We knew we had a problem when the taxi driver saw the hotel name and said “Merd”. Turns out the Paris Marathon was today and most of the roads leading to the bridges are closed. We ended up in the tunnels under the river wondering if we were in the same one where Princess Diana was last seen. We got to the hotel and no one knew about Viking Cruise pick up. After we were later than our pickup time, Norm talked to each bus in the parking lot until he found the right one. We boarded and went off on our 7 hour trip to the boat. It took longer than planned as the boat had to stop in Lyon instead of Chalon Saone. The river was too high for the boat to make it to the first stop. We had a small walking tour and lunch in Dijon. We were surprised to learn that while Dijon mustard is indeed made here, the mustard seeds come from Canada as the French ones were destroyed in the past. In addition, we learned that almost all French vineyards are made from American roots. This is because a blight came over from America in the past and destroyed the roots of all vines except the ones growing in sand. Vines had to be imported from America as they were immune to the blight. Most vines today are French vines grafted to the American roots. No difference, the wine still tasted good. However, if you have a chance to get a bottle of wine from surviving original French vines that were not destroyed, it will cost you hundreds of dollars a bottle. One wine even costs 1000 Euros per bottle.
