Then we began our walking tour of Jerusalem’s old city quarters. The Armenian section was filled with posters and symbols representing the 1.5 million persecuted and killed by the Turks in the beginning of the 20th century. We walked past a Jewish school where we could hear the students talking which is the primary way of learning in Israel. The Sephardic Jewish Temples were dome shaped taking on Mosque architecture, but had to be lower than the Turkish, Muslim Mosques of the time. Then to the Western (Wailing) Wall, which is the only part of the second temple complex that remains today. The term Wailing originated from the Roman’s when they would allow the Jew’s back to the Wall once a year, on the 9th day of Av, as the Jewish people cried for their destroyed temple while praying. Then we followed the “Via Dolorosa”, representing the 14 stages of the cross.
