Off to Bethlehem for lunch at St. Georges. Since Bethlehem is Palestinian, our guide Leah did not accompany us, but our driver Mohammed took us there. After lunch we met a guide at the Church of Nativity, where it is believed Jesus was born, as shown in the picture. The church is actually 3 in one, as there are the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian sections. Originally built in the 4th century, with floor mosaics from Helena, mother of Constantine, then the Crusaders added wall mosaics and paintings in the 12th century. Over the centuries the door to the church became lower and lower, so as to bow as entering the church. At St. Catherine’s Church, the Catholic addition which occurred 120 years ago, there is an annual broadcast at Christmas. We entered the cave of St. Jerome, who was the first man to translate the bible to Latin in the 4th century from Hebrew and Greek. He lived and died in this cave which also includes the tomb for the children killed by Herod, when Jesus was born.
