We toured Valparaiso today. This is the port capital for all shipments in and out of Santiago. The town was established in 1536. There really were not many cobwebs for a town that old. The town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1906. It is very hilly and looks like San Francisco except smaller and older buildings. The town is so hilly that our tour guide told us that the women here have the best legs in all of Chile. The town is made with very few tall buildings. The tall ones are in the connecting town of Vina del Mar. Valpariaso is an artist town where all of the “in” artists come to hang out. We heard a small Jazz group playing near an observation area. Cindy found a lovely Llama that needed dental work. She paid to take a picture of the Llama and its owner. As we toured, we also saw a large outdoor photo exhibit. Some of the interesting photos had to do with Pinochet. He was a military dictator for 17 years from 1973 till 1990. There were photos honoring him and others holding up photos with notes saying “Where are they?” since many disappeared during the reign of Pinochet. After he was kicked out of government, they moved the congress from Santiago to Valparaiso but kept the presidential palace in Santiago.
