Up early for our zodiac ride to Magdalena Island to visit with over 120,000 Magallenic penguins. While these were the same species we saw in Punta Tombo, the island was very different. There was not shrubbery as at the other location, and the penguins here were much more active this morning. Many of the parents were scraping out their burrows with dirt flying everywhere, obviously adding a room addition for their babies that were now larger than they were. Also, many of the parents, who with this species mate for life, were very affectionate toward each other this morning with hugging, clicking of the beaks, etc. The babies were almost done with their molting and will be taking off for the water that they are learning to swim in sometime in March. We walked along the path up to the lighthouse at the top center of the island to observe that the entire island is covered with burrows and penguins. It appeared that we outstayed our welcome as it began to rain on our walk back to the zodiac and we were one of last back on the ship. Now we dried off, went to breakfast, packed and watched as the Via Australis docked at Punta Arenes.
